What changes the price
- Lesson length. 30, 45, and 60 minutes are standard. Longer lessons cost more per lesson but can cost less per minute.
- Experience and specialty. Teachers with advanced training or a performance career often charge more than teachers focused on beginners.
- Location. Lessons at your home can include a travel fee. Rates also vary by city.
- Independent teacher or school. Schools and chains may add registration fees or bundle group classes, recitals, or band rehearsals into monthly tuition.
- Packages. Many teachers lower the per-lesson rate when you buy several lessons up front.
Monthly tuition vs paying per lesson
Some independent teachers charge per lesson; many studios and schools bill a monthly or term tuition for a set number of weekly lessons. Monthly plans often hold your weekly time slot and may come with a notice period to cancel. Ask how months with a fifth week, holidays, and missed lessons are handled.
